Can Fibroids Make You Nauseous?

Posted on September 30, 2024

Some women with uterine fibroids experience a range of symptoms, including menstrual cramps, heavy bleeding, back pain and more. In addition to these symptoms, fibroids can cause nausea for some women. Here’s what you need to know.

Fibroids and nausea

Why can fibroids cause nausea for some women? Sometimes, fibroids cause constipation, especially when larger tumors put pressure on organs surrounding your uterus. And, when your bowel health is impacted, your GI tract health could suffer. Furthermore, if heavy bleeding due to fibroids causes anemia, you may experience dizziness that, in turn, could contribute to nausea. Finally, if having fibroids makes your menstrual cramps stronger, you could also experience nausea during that time of the month.

Additional Fibroid Symptoms

Aside from the fibroid symptoms already mentioned, some women experience different or additional concerns. In fact, while fibroids can make you nauseous, they can also cause pelvic pain, uterine enlargement, pain with sex, and frequent urination. In the short term, you can relieve individual symptoms. (See below for tips on nausea relief.) But ultimately, if you want to find a lasting solution to each of your symptoms, you’ll need to seek fibroid treatment.

Nausea Remedies

When fibroids cause nausea, you can try managing your symptoms by going outside for fresh air, closing your eyes and breathing deeply. You may feel better if you remove any external pressure from your stomach. And sometimes, allowing yourself to vomit when you feel the need will provide the best relief from the nausea.

When fibroids and nausea are a long term problem, you can make changes to your diet to relieve other GI concerns. Try adding more fiber, to reduce constipation. Or eat iron-rich foods to improve your red blood cell count and reduce your risk for anemia. Additionally, exploring your fibroid treatment options will help you find lasting relief from nausea and other symptoms that may be impacting your quality of life.

Fibroid Treatment Options

There are a range of ways you can manage your fibroids. Some options, such as lifestyle changes and medication, can relieve symptoms. But they won’t shrink your tumors. Other options, such as myomectomy or hysterectomy, are surgical and invasive, so they may result in additional concerns. However, there’s a minimally-invasive fibroid treatment that can shrink your tumors and relieve fibroid symptoms. Known as uterine fibroid embolization, this procedure is available in our six Houston area fibroid centers, and we invite you to request a consultation to learn more about your options.
